Sir Simon RattleConductor

Sir Simon Rattle conducts the British masterpiece at the very centre of his musical life: Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.

‘This is the best of me,’ declared Edward Elgar on the score of The Dream of Gerontius, and in a great performance, this heart-rending, transcendently beautiful vision of a lonely soul’s journey towards eternity can leave audiences in tears. For Sir Simon, it’s a lifelong love, and to perform it today, he’s assembled an unsurpassable team.

It's not just that the LSO was Elgar’s own orchestra – or even that our soloists today combine world-beating operatic credentials with a lifelong love of Elgar’s music. Simon Halsey has prepared Gerontius with the world’s greatest choirs including the London Symphony Chours, and for Rattle it’s been a constant throughout his career, with the Guardian praising the ‘dramatic power and sometimes enormous intensity’ of his interpretation. This is personal: straight from the heart.
