The final concert in this series takes us through a gallery of colourful pictures. The programme opens with a collection of miniature masterpieces, Schubert’s Impromptus D899 - some of the first ever purely lyrical pieces written for piano. Sonata in A major D664 is more formal, yet thought to paint a joyful portrait of the young Schubert, living in a summery Austrian countryside, and in love.

Mussorgsky was inspired by the sudden death of artist Viktor Hartmann to pay tribute to his close friend with a virtuoso musical show of his paintings. Pictures at an Exhibition vividly depicts a collection of ten eclectic scenes – including a castle, quarrelling children, a ballet of unhatched chicks, gossiping market stall-holders, and of course the Great Gate of Kiev – linked by a gentle Promenade from one exhibit to the next.

Mark Bebbington (“Truly a remarkable pianist” - The Times) has fast emerged as one of Britain’s most distinctive and innovative pianists, internationally acclaimed for his performances and recordings. Mark has recently toured Europe with the Czech National Orchestra and Israel with the Israel Camerata, and he performs as a soloist in the US and UK with the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and Buffalo Orchestras.
