Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach stands for the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era, for a new and sensitive ‘personal’ style abounding in surprises and contrasts. But what connects him with his much younger fellow-composer Beethoven? His early F-major Sinfonia, written in Berlin in 1755, is a full half-century older than Beethoven’s first two symphonies, and even his late G-major Sinfonia anticipated them by more than 20 years. But the two composers have at least one thing in common: whenever Johann Sebastian Bach’s second son and the Viennese émigré Beethoven set out to write music, whether for piano or for orchestra, they were both wilful ‘hotheads’ who reinvented the sonata and the symphony from the ground up.
