Is it strange to gather on a midsummer’s evening to recall the sometimes splendid and harrowing trials of winter? Over the past year, during the enforced seclusion brought about by the pandemic, many of us have seen all too clearly how the wintry spirit of bitter cold can invade our lives even on the brightest days. One of the many messages of Schubert’s Winterreise (1828), however, is the recompense of art: the discovery that romantic beauty can emerge from the winter journey, with its solitude and hardships, and accompanying sense of alienation. Therein lies catharsis, and that is what transforms Schubert’s Winterreise from a profoundly intimate portrayal of the emotional travails of an individual, unrequited lover into a masterpiece for all times and seasons.
