A belated birthday celebration: The complete sonatas for Cello and Piano

Hearing the five sonatas for cello and piano is perhaps one of the best ways to appreciate Ludwig van Beethoven's unique evolution as a composer. Divided neatly across his three creative periods, from the youthful sonatas op. 5 that smash the Mozartean mould, through the sublimely tender op. 69 of his middle period, and finally to the visionary, unconventional sonatas op. 102 of his final years, this small marathon will give you an intimate biography of this endlessly adventurous creator.

The concert will be broadcast live from the Chamber Music Hall of the Beethovenhaus in Bonn, the composer's birthplace. Not only is the hall renowned for its optimal acoustics, but literally beneath its stage is one of the most important archives of Beethoven's manuscripts - sacred ground for any music-lover!

Cellist Jonathan Weigle is solo cello of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, and is regularly invited to lead some of Europe's finest orchestras. Pianist Ben Cruchley is the laureate of numerous piano competitions, including the Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn. Chamber music partners just since this summer, they have already performed feverishly across Germany, earning accolades for their work
