Video streamed event: Ryō Terakado: Arcangelo Corelli Sonatas

The princesses and princes of the Baroque era certainly knew how to hold court. This wasn’t just a question of extravagantly furnished palaces and gorgeous clothes and wigs, but also, and more than anything else, lavishly decked tables and edifying music. In the orangery of the Bayreuth Hermitage we invite you in the Baroque tradition to an exquisite dinner and afterwards to a concert fitting to the occasion in the Sun Temple.

Court society at that time had a particular predilection for the Baroque trio sonata at its banquets, since the small instrumental setting neither required too much room nor was loud enough to drown out the guests’ conversations. However, there was the danger of not honouring many a masterpiece with the appropriate attention. One of the great masters of Baroque chamber music was the Italian violin virtuoso Arcangelo Corelli. In contrast to most of his fellow composers, Corelli wrote exclusively instrumental music; here he had a formative and permanent influence especially on chamber music and was of crucial significance for the development of violin technique. Until the early nineteenth century, Corelli’s compositions, which included 48 trio sonatas, were the most published works in music history, and this although he composed only a relatively small complete oeuvre. Ryō Terakado, Kaori Uemura and Fabio Bonizzoni present an exquisite selection from Corelli’s masterly chamber music – a gourmet pleasure for both palate and ears!
