The sight of Mary Stuart’s famous Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, and especially the dilapidated chapel, left such a strong impression on the 20-year-old tourist Felix Mendelssohn that the experience eventually resulted in a whole symphony.

The music reflects the contemplation in front of the overgrown chapel, Scotland’s scenery with surging waves hitting the cliffs of the coast, and Scottish joviality in the whirling folk dance of the scherzo. Many years later the symphony was played with great success in London, and Mendelssohn was invited to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who were among the admirers. This formidable symphony was dedicated to them.
