On demand until Wednesday 14 July 2021 23:59Festival: O/Modernt

‘There is no new thing under the sun’, the author of Ecclesiastes famously declared, and how paradoxically true that is, even when it comes to the most innovative art and music. Beethoven, who ceaselessly sought out innovative sound worlds, imported a sense of the unresolved past into his ‘Ghost’ trio (allegedly based on Shakespeare), while his towering achievement cast a shadow over subsequent generations, not least Brahms, who strained every sinew to come to terms with the music of Beethoven and Schubert in his revivifying Piano Quintet in F minor. New music has been a key feature of O/Modernt’s artistic mission from the outset, and it is a great pleasure to present two Swedish premieres. Brett Dean’s Imaginary Ballet for Piano and String Trio (2021) responds to the challenges of recent times with a mix of terpsichorean verve and peaceful quietude, while Celan Pieces by Francisco Jose Andreo Gázquez, the winner of the 2020 O/Modernt Composition Prize, finds the matrix of creation in the digging of earth and the blank plenitude of infinity.
