The new Junior Ballett evening bears the title «Impulse», and was given its digital premiere in February, broadcast live from Winterthur. Now, this exhilarating evening will be presented live on the main stage of the Opernhaus. For this new work, the Junior Ballett created three new world premieres with the three emerging young choreographers: Craig Davidson, Bryan Arias, and Juliano Nunes. All three are well on their way to developing their own respective choreographic styles.

Craig Davidson of Australia has danced with the Royal Ballet of Flanders and with the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden. His choreographic language is influenced by elements of the classical movement vocabulary, which he relentlessly endeavors to question and rethink in a contemporary spirit. In his piece, entitled Entropy and set to music by Nicholas Robert Thayer, the dancers go through various stages of emotion and confrontation, ultimately leading to adaptation and change.

Choreographer Bryan Arias of the USA lives in Basel and was a member of the Nederlands Dans Theaters (NDT) and Crystal Pite’s company «Kidd Pivot». He was awarded with the German Theater Prize «Der Faust» in 2020, and is known for his quietly poetic, minimalistic works. His first piece for the Junior Ballett questions the role of happenstance in our lives. Set to a mixture of soul music, solo piano works, and atmospheric sounds, Bryan Arias’ Pure Coincidence sees six disparate figures as they encounter one another. They are connected to one another not just via dance, but by a variety of objects, giving the piece a distinctive and magical character.

Juliano Nunes is from Brazil. He has danced with the Leipzig Ballet and Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart, among others, and has choreographed for a number of internally-renowned companies. In his work Union in Poetry, set to music by Ezio Bosso, Arvo Pärt, and Frédéric Chopin, dancers discover their freedom through movement. Despite differences in their individual personalities, a sense of togetherness emerges, empowering everyone.
