Disguised as a man and calling herself Fidelio (the faithful), Leonore has herself employed as the assistant to the gaoler in a state prison. The governor of the prison is keeping her husband – his most dangerous opponent – hidden there, and intends to starve him slowly to death. When the minister comes for a review of the prison, the governor decides that the prisoner must die quickly. Leonore has to dig her own husband’s grave. At the moment of greatest danger, a trumpet signal announces that rescue is at hand.

Beethoven considered plans for an opera all his life, but only the story of the woman who risks her life to rescue her beloved husband from prison conformed to his vision of an idealistic operatic plot. Austrian tenor Andreas Schager – considered one of the most distinguished heroic tenors of our time – will be presenting himself for the first time at Zurich Opera House as Florestan. The German singer Wolfgang Koch will also be giving his long overdue début in Zurich as Don Pizarro. As at the première, Anja Kampe will be singing Leonore in this production staged by Zurich Opera director Andreas Homoki. Markus Poschner will conduct the Philharmonia Zurich.
