Old Vienna meets the Wien Modern of fin-de-siècle Austria in Frank Peter Zimmermann’s recital. The German violinist, hailed by BBC Music Magazine as an artist who matches ‘technical mastery at the highest level with profound insight’, follows one of Schubert’s early violin sonatinas with the miniature dreamscapes of Webern’s 4 Pieces and pairs Schoenberg’s rhapsodic Phantasy, composed in Los Angeles in 1949, with Schubert’s four-movement Fantasy in C, a late masterwork.
