For the Lied Concert series, pianist Magnus Svensson invites an exclusive group of artists from the world’s opera and concert stages, offering audiences the opportunity to experience their vocal artistry in the intimate setting of the Grünewald Hall. In this concert, we hear British tenor Robin Tritschler, admired for his radiant, clear voice and his ability to illuminate the meaning of the texts he performs.

For this evening of lieder, he has selected songs all set to texts by the German poet Heinrich Heine – undoubtedly the most frequently set poet in the history of art song. Heine was a controversial figure who went into exile in France in the early 1830s, but his emotionally rich texts – often laced with humour and irony – have exerted an irresistible appeal on countless composers.

Robin Tritschler performs songs by some of the greatest names in the genre, all of whom were inspired by Heine’s words: Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann, Edvard Grieg and many more. The evening culminates in Schumann’s masterpiece Dichterliebe – also, of course, with text by Heine.

Magnus Svensson has served as artistic director of the song recital series for several seasons. In addition to concert work across the Nordic region and Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the USA. Since 2012, he has worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with the re-publication of older Swedish music.
