Composed around the time of Tristan and Isolde and connected to the romantic musical drama by multiple threads, the Wesendonck cycle is a particularly exciting work within Wagner’s oeuvre. The author of the poems was Mathilde Wesendonck: "She was and remains my first and only love. The years spent with her were the most radiant of my life,” Wagner once said. The crowning glory of Bruckner’s symphonic output was his Symphony No. 8, which János Richter first introduced to an audience in Vienna in 1892. Present at the premiere were such luminaries of the Viennese music scene as Brahms, Hugo Wolf and Johann Strauss, and it goes without saying that his most devoted followers and fiercest critics were also in attendance. It should come as no surprise then that the work was met with a mixed reception. The debate has since subsided, but the piece continues to be one of the most enigmatic of the symphonic repertoire.
