Leeds Lieder Festival, has been described by the Sunday Times as ‘a compact triumph of outstanding art song’, and it celebrates the performance and composition of song and of poetry in many languages.

Between its annual festivals Leeds Lieder holds a lively programme of concerts, talks and educational activities in co-promotions with the Howard Assembly Room at Opera North, Leeds College of Music, the University of Leeds and Leeds International Concert Series. Filling the city with song.

In 2017 Leeds Lieder will present its seventh festival of song at Leeds College of Music from Friday 21 – Sunday 23 April 2017. This year’s theme is Songs of Travel and Leeds Lieder Director Joseph Middleton has brought together both internationally acclaimed and rising stars to explore it.

Simon Keenlyside, one of the world’s most sought after and charismatic singers, opens the Festival, making one of his few UK recital appearances this year. He is known for his highly charged performances, probing intellect and rich baritone voice.

The much-loved soprano Dame Felicity Lott explores the collaborative nature of song performance with her long-standing duo partner, Graham Johnson. Platforms are given to the next generation of singers, pianists, poets and composers and fast-rising stars include young Austrian mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert. In addition, hundreds of schoolchildren will be involved in song projects over the months running up to the Festival.

Renowned actor Timothy West joins the Festival to work with young artists on poetry and storytelling. An exciting new commission by Iain Bell is premièred by Rowan Pierce and Roger Vignoles; and the music of Ravel is explored in a study event and a recital by Clara Mouriz.  In a star-studded closing Gala, a remarkable line-up of artists come together to celebrate Leeds Lieder founder, the late Jane Anthony.
