Beethoven, aware that his Piano Sonata in C-sharp minor had an unusual form, gave it the subtitle ’quasi una Fantasia’. But it was only after his death that the Berlin music critic Ludwig Rellstab christened it the ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, making it the ne plus ultra of romantic music. In 1985-86 Giselher Klebe gave it modern garb by entrusting the melody to that most romantic of instruments, the French horn. No less romantic is Hector Berlioz’s song cycle ‘Les nuits d‘été’, which founded the genre of the orchestral song. Enigmatic, yearning and dark-hued, here the vocal part is embedded in the luxuriant sound of the orchestra. Dirk Kaftan combines these six ‘mid-summer night songs’ with a choice selection of nature paintings and musical storms by other composers.
