Early Music Day 2019

21st March 2019

The seventh edition of the Early Music Day will take place across Europe on Thursday 21 March 2019!

On 21 March 2019, day of the spring solstice and anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's birthday, the Early Music Day will celebrate a heritage that spans over 1000 years of musical history, from the music of the Middle Ages to the XVIIIth century.

While some of the composers of these eras are widely known, there is a large repertoire still to be re-discovered by today’s audiences. The Early Music Day aims to increase awareness of the music from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods and bring it to the attention of a wider audience.

Promoted by REMA (European Early Music Network), organisers across Europe and beyond are invited to create events linked to early music, from concerts to conferences.

On 21 March, more than a hundred events (concerts, lectures, workshops…) will take place across the continent. Many of them streamed live as part of a digital celebration through Facebook and remaradio.eu, giving isolated audiences the opportunity to attend many of these concerts from their home.

Former editions took place under the support and patronage of Mr Tibor Navracsics and Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou, respectively current and former European Commissioner for Culture, UNESCO, as well as artists Jordi Savall, William Christie, René Jacobs and Skip Sempé.

Hip harpsichordist Jean Rondeau is this year’s Early Music Day ambassador.

It is very important that we join forces to support the music of earlier ages, as well as the performers and organisations who disseminate it, and that is precisely what the European Network for Early Music has done in coming up with the idea of holding this Day of celebration.” _ Jordi Savall
