Mikhail PletnevDirector
Concerto Budapest

Ever since the age of 21, that is, after his triumph at the 1978 Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition, Mikhail Pletnev has belonged to the select group of international pianist phenomena, and for 30 years he has also appeared on countless occasions as conductor (as well as founder of the Russian National Orchestra). At this concert the great Russian artist appears in both roles; during the first part of the recital he conducts the Stravinsky work Pulcinella that depicts the world of commedia dell'arte poetically and wittily, then after the break we hear the perfect and stylish play of Pletnev in solos of two 18th century piano concertos. The first in the series of Bach keyboard concertos is followed by one of the most passionate and perfect of Mozart’s concertos for piano, the C minor (1786), that strongly affected both Beethoven and Brahms. Naturally, the composers themselves played the solo parts at the first public performances of both concertos.
