The Iceland Symphony’s Our Classics concerts, now held for the fourth time in cooperation with the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV) have been quite an attention-getter in recent years. This year’s request was for stories about how classical works affected Icelanders, how they commemorate major events or unforgettable people — or simply how they spice up everyday life. A selection of works nominated will be performed in Eldborg hall at a special gala concert, a pre-season taste of the upcoming year at the Iceland Symphony.

A large number of suggestions were submitted this year, and the programme will cover an unusually wide range. It features selections from solo concerti, choral works, operatic arias, and orchestral pieces from the Baroque period to the present day.

Among the works on the programme are Pachelbel’s Canon, the Hallelujah Chorus from Händel’s Messiah, excerpts from Mozart’s Requiem, Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and arias from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and La bohème. Conductor Daníel Bjarnason takes the podium, welcoming a host of solo vocalists and instrumentalists and guest choirs for this diverse programme of classical masterpieces.

The concert will be televised live by RÚV.
