January 26th - February 4th, 2018

2018 Mozart Week opens with a new production of Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Musical director is Belgian conductor René Jacobs, a leading figure in the worlds of early music and Mozart, and Andrea Moses is stage director. This is a double première, since Jacobs has not yet conducted a stage performance of the Entführung, and the production will be Andrea Moses's Salzburg début as director.

It is a Mozart Week tradition to present the composer's work from a variety of viewpoints, highlighting previously unknown links and perspectives, while allowing due scope for innovation. For instance, in 2018 the three Vienna Philharmonic concerts will see three different conductors on the podium, two of them for the first time, juxtaposing Mozart with works from their own personal repertoire. Young French conductor Alain Altinoglu, music director of La Monnaie in Brussels, brings with him Georges Bizet's sole, Mozartian symphony; Robin Ticciati, music director of Glyndebourne, conducts Elgar's Violin Concerto; and Valery Gergiev, artistic and general director of the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre, marks the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's death with a performance of his Mozartiana.

The sheer diversity of Mozart interpretation will be displayed not only by the orchestral concerts, but also by numerous pianists including Daniel Barenboim, András Schiff, Robert Levin, Piotr Anderszewski (now performing for the first time with the Vienna Philharmonic), and David Fray (making his Mozart Week début). Other Mozart Week "firsts" are the celebrated soprano Marlies Petersen, the young Schumann Quartet, and the B’Rock Orchestra with the young German soprano Anna Lucia Richter.

In our new format, Portrait, Jörg Widmann – composer, conductor and clarinet virtuoso – will guide audiences through 2018 Mozart Week. Since the start of his career, Widmann has been a familiar figure in the Foundation's programmes, and in 2018 the Austrian première of his Clarinet Quintet will be juxtaposed with that of Mozart. This dialogue promises a fascinating exploration of Mozart's work as reflected in a contemporary composition.

In his function as Mozart ambassador, Rolando Villazón will present a concert at 2018 Mozart Week, focusing on the relationship between Mozart and his wife Constanze. He will read from their correspondence, which shows Mozart's personal and musical concerns during these formative years. Thus, with his infectious enthusiasm, Rolando Villazón will afford the audience further insights into the life of Mozart as musician, man and husband.
