«Yes, Marthaler and Rossini are a perfect match », proclaimed the daily Tages Anzeiger newspaper on the occasion of the Zurich premiere of Gioachino Rossini’s last Italian-language opera Il viaggio a Reims. We revive Christoph Marthaler’s prophetic, profound European persiflage, in which no fewer than 13 bel canto singers meet up in the most absurd situations. This revival features a number of exciting new cast members: among others, soprano Anna Aglatova is Corinna, Nadezhda Karyazina is Melibea, and Pietro Spagnoli is Don Profondo. As at the premiere, Serena Farnocchia appears as the yodeling hotel owner Madama Cortese. Riccardo Minasi musically directs this comedic jewel.

A gaggle of privileged personalities from all of Europe find themselves stranded at a spa hotel in provincial France, all with the same travel destination in their sights: Reims. There, they’ll attend the coronation ceremonies for Charles X. But their only means of transportation – the noble steed – is in high demand. The entire company finds themselves stuck. Or, as Marthaler asked himself, would the European gentlemen perhaps rather not leave the hotel? Could they potentially lose their elite status? The Golden Lily hotel is also a clinic – but what ails this colorful group of European society types, who embody everything except harmonic unity and pursue a pronounced self-centeredness? Even Rossini’s highly virtuosic arias and complicated ensembles obscure the events, rather than provide clear answers...
