Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival

Biography

March 4th – 17th, 2019

Barcelona is one of the world’s top tourist destinations, and the National Geographic magazine described it as being one of the top ten cities in the world which has to be visited during your lifetime. The city provides a unique experience to the visitor and Barcelona has: a vibrant cultural scene, fine shopping, rich gastronomy and in itself is a two-thousand-year-old city. Located in the Mediterranean, its setting offers a perfect mix between leisure, culture and nature.

Barcelona is also a reference for music events, with a wide offer of classical music concerts, theatre performances and festivals. Among the best music venues, stand out the Liceu Opera, one of the best opera houses in Europe, the modernista Palau de la Música Catalana and L'Auditori, which together offer a world-class music agenda.

A new benchmark for the city’s classical music scene has emerged from the coming together of the Liceu Opera, the Palau de la Música Catalana and L’Auditori: Barcelona Obertura Classic and Lyric. This initiative aims to promote Barcelona’s rich variety of music on the world map, as one of the global cities where classical music matters.

Pau Casals, Alícia de Larrocha, Frederic Mompou, Josep Carreras, Jaume Aragall, Montserrat Caballé, Victoria de los Angeles, Jordi Savall, Cuarteto Casals... all of these key musicians in Spain’s musical tradition have one thing in common: they call Barcelona their hometown. The citizenship has always been proud of their musical heritage. Through a continuous effort over many decades, nowadays Barcelona enjoys an exceptional variety of musical institutions with three overwhelming venues, Liceu Opera, one of the largest theatres in Europe, the Palau de la Música, only UNESCO World Heritage concert hall worldwide and L’Auditori, by dimension and scope, a true city of music by itself. These institutions present, season after season, very attractive programs that welcome in Barcelona all major artists of our times. Every season, the three institutions join forces to present the Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival. During two weeks in March you will find a sequence of opera performances and concerts with top artists and local talent that will show you the strength of Barcelona as a music capital. Come and discover it!

Barcelona Obertura: the city opens its doors

Barcelona has great music but attracts few visitors from abroad. If Victor Medem gets his way, that's going to change, starting with an ambitious new festival in March 2019.
