Festival: Casa Dei Mezzo Music Festival

Biography

June 22nd - 25th, 2018

Casa Dei Mezzo Music Festival was founded in 2004 by Gunnar Strømsholm, partner of Ellison & Strømsholm International Artists’ Management in London.

The Casa dei Mezzo Music Festival’s evening concerts are held at Casa Dei Mezzo, the home of the founder and one lunchtime concerts in the deserted medieval village of Etia in the original Villa Dei Mezzo.

We not only believe that this music festival serves as a platform to bring classical music to the people living in Crete but it brings visitors from all over the world who wants to experience classical music in the exceptional surroundings of the small fishing village of Makrigialos on the Libyan Sea.

Casa Dei Mezzo, designed by Arkadia Arkitekter AS (Norway), is our main “concert hall” that offers pianists a Bösendorfer Model 290 Imperial as well as world class classical music performed by new and established artists. The Casa Dei Mezzo Music Festival has been invited to give performances at Wigmore Hall (2008) and at the Basilica of Saint Mark in Heraklion (2010).

Semi- staged operas performed at Casa Dei Mezzo are: Madama Butterfly (2008) artistic director Brian Stanborough, La Voix Humaine (2012) artistic director John Lidal and Idomeneo, Ré di Creta (2016) artistic director Anne Gjevang.

For 2017 we are happy to announce that Italian Armoniosa Baroque Ensemble will be the main attraction together with Norwegian baroque recorder player Ingeborg Christophersen.

Norwegian Mezzo Hege Høisæter and German baritone Hubert Wild will sing Schumann and Brahms accompanied by the eminent Tarek Al-Shubbak and the festival will see a return by guitarist Chronis Koutsoumpides who will be coming straight from his solo concert at Megaron in Thessaloniki.

Crete has several excellent music schools for children, but very few places where classical music can be heard. Creating a festival far off the beaten track has had it’s challenges but this festival gives something special to visiting artists as well as visitor and has become an important event not only for the Lasithi region but also for the island since this is the only true classical music festival in Crete.
