Festival: Cistermúsica - Festival de Música de Alcobaça

Jun 26th – Jul 31st 2020

Cistermúsica - Festival de Música de Alcobaça, has been celebrating for more than 25 years the joy and excellence of classical music. One of the oldest and well known classical music festivals in Portugal, it presents novelties each year, which extrapolate the boundaries of tradition without breaking them. Keeping up with the programming of modern premieres, new compositions from Portuguese authors and the promotion of young music talents, the Festival does not forget the educational aim and the different publics. “A Classic for All!” is more than a simple motto, it’s a way of putting Cistermúsica together, bringing it to everyone.

Cistermúsica is one of the most prestigious and well-established erudite music festivals in Portugal, recognised by “Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe” since 2015, for its artistic quality and significant impact on the local, national and international level.
Most of the shows take place in the monumental scenery of the Alcobaça Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other iconic places are selected in accordance with the criteria of the cultural heritage, not only in Alcobaça but also across the country, following the European Cistercian Route.

Every year the programme of the Festival follows a specific theme, offering an assorted program which runs during one month and taking in mind different audiences and artistic affinities: from great orchestras to renowned soloists, chamber groups and ensembles, including dance, cinema, theatre, and literature.
It is no coincidence that Cistermúsica’s motto is “A Classic for all”. With the determination to bring new audiences closer to erudite music, the Festival keeps the main focus on children and families, who can find, in the “Junior & Families” programme, an adequate cultural offer that intends to raise their awareness to appreciation and study of the Arts. At the same time, the “Off Programme” promotes the connection of erudite music with other artistic expressions meeting a wider and more diverse audience.
