Festival: Klangvokal Musikfestival

The 2019 KLANGVOKAL Music Festival in Dortmund, now in its eleventh year, is also contributing to current social discourse on community and solidarity with its central theme entitled “WIR!” (“WE”). From 16 May to 16 June 2019, outstanding artists from more than 20 countries representing a rich musical spectrum ranging from opera and choral music to world and pop music and song, from the 14th century to the present day, will demonstrate how we can fortify ourselves with the power of music and use it to create a “WE feeling”. Many of the 22 events are co-productions with renowned institutions such as Cologne’s state broadcaster, WDR Köln, the Dresden Musikfestspiele, the Händel Festspiele Halle, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Concertgebouw Brügge.

The festival will open with the “Italian Opera Gala” where star soloists Anna Pirozzi and Teodor Ilincai will embody great lovers of opera history. The programme focuses on the dangers of love and friendship as portrayed in Georges Bizet’s opera “Les Pêcheurs de perles” (“The Pearl Fishers”). Three further performances will celebrate the genius of Georg Friedrich Handel: “Agrippina” with star conductor Christophe Rousset and his outstanding ensemble, “Gender Stories” with the wonderful mezzo soprano Vivica Genaux and the celebrated counter tenor Lawrence Zazzo and “Händels Heroinen” (“Handel’s Heroines”) with enchanting soprano Carolyn Sampson and The King’s Consort.

Choir singing unites! The Jugendkonzertchor der Chorakademie Dortmund (Youth Concert Choir of the Choir Academy Dortmund) and the Dresdner Kammerchor (Dresden Chamber Choir) demonstrate this beautifully as they conquer musical “Himmelswelten” (“Heavenly Worlds”). The award-winning Vocalconsort Berlin will be a major attraction with “The Psalms of David” penned by Orlando di Lasso. For the finale, two highlights of choral singing will grace the programme, the 11th FEST DER CHÖRE (FESTIVAL OF CHOIRS) and the internationally acclaimed Latvian Radio Choir.

Further high points include an invitation from the great Spanish cosmopolitan, Jordi Savall, to a dialogue of cultures with his “Homage to Syria”. The festival also features exquisite jazz singing from Indra Rios-Moore, gospels from Michelle David and sophisticated world music from Blick Bassy and NES. A special highlight will be a performance by dazzling soul singer, Kovacs.
