Biography

July 25th – August 2nd, 2018

Welcome to the35 th Korsholm Music Festival 2018! The festival is held in the city and region of Vaasa and Korsholm. The region is situated on the west coast of Finland, only one hour flight from the capitals Helsinki and Stockholm and only four hours by ferry from Umeå in Sweden, the shortest ferry line between Finland and Sweden. The festival invites leading Nordic and international artists to perform during the summer, with music ranging from baroque compositions to classical chamber works and new music. The festival is one of the most acknowledged chamber music festivals in Finland, and brings its mood to this coastal region as music resounds in concert halls, restaurants, museums and idyllic church buildings. Our famous bright nights bring a special magic to the festival atmosphere!

Artistic director is pianist-professor Henri Sigfridsson. The theme for the festival goes under the name Truth and tales, based on the autobiography of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Dichtung und Wahrheit. The idea is better understanding of life through art. In connection to the theme we will in particular hear music from the world of mythology, from the zone between truth and tales and real stories.

Finland's 100th anniversary will be honored with a great amount of Finnish music. Uljas Pulkkis is writing a special work for accordion, piano (lefthand) and orchestra. Finland is also well represented in the artist line-up, which contains many familiar faces but also new exciting names.

Concerts are being arranged around the Ostrobothnian region at cultural historic sites. The program is versatile from children’s concerts and lectures for the audience to lighter music, the main focus remaining on classical chamber music. The support for young artists is important: The Youth Piano Academy, Finland, that has gained success, will give a concert during the festival. We are ordering compositions from the composers Johannes Piirto and Matti Heininen. We are also arranging master classes, which are open to the audience during the festival.

Vaasa and Korsholm are among the most beautiful areas in the Nordic region. The white winters with a frozen sea, the calm autumn with its beautiful colors, the springtime with flowers blooming and the bright nights of summer, truly makes Vaasa and Korsholm a year-round destination. The regions are embraced by the sea and the stunning UNESCO ́s World Heritage site Kvarken Archipelago – Finland’s first and only Natural World Heritage Site. Apart from the unique nature, there is also a vibrant city life with many colorful events and interesting attractions to experience in the area. The culture and people of Vaasa and Korsholm are warm and welcoming.
