Festival: Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod

July 7th – 12th, 2020

Since 1947 Llangollen has staged one of the world’s most inspirational cultural festivals. Each year, 4,000 performers converge on this picturesque, small Welsh town to sing and dance in a unique combination of competition, performance, and international peace and friendship.

Acknowledged as one of the foremost world festivals, and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, the Eisteddfod began with a vision of healing the wounds of the Second World War by promoting peace and goodwill between nations through music, folklore and dance.

During the day, singers, dancers and instrumentalists from around the globe take part in a variety of competitions adjudicated by leading names from the world of music and dance. The festival site features additional stages with performances from both competitors and world music acts, along with exhibitors, retailers, craft workers and global cuisine outlets.

In the evening, the Royal International Pavilion plays host to a variety of concerts including world-class artists and the prestigious televised Choir of the World competition, which sees the finest choirs from across the globe compete for the highly sought-after Pavarotti Trophy.

The festival is ambitious and innovative in its concert programming, bringing high profile classical artists to North Wales such as Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Bryn Terfel, Katherine Jenkins, Kristine Opolais, Montserrat Caballé, Rolando Villazón, Catrin Finch, Elin Manahan Thomas, Noah Stewart, Margot Fonteyn, Alicia Markova, Joan Sutherland, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Jehudi Menuhin.

The 2019 star-studded concert line-up includes the jazz, blues and swing showstopper Jools Holland, one of the music world’s most critically acclaimed tenors, Rolando Villazón, the magnificent lyric soprano, Rhian Lois, supreme Welsh vocalists Shân Cothi and Rhodri Prys Jones, award winning folk band MABON, the salsa, rumba and flamenco outfit, Gipsy Kings, and internationally renowned harpist Catrin Finch.
