Festival: String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam

January 25th - February 1st, 2020

Every other year, Amsterdam becomes the world’s focal point for string quartets, string quartet devotees, composers, artists and curious listeners. For eight days, the Muziekgebouw is completely transformed into the String Quartet Biennale, where one can submerge oneself completely in string quartet. From the early morning until late at night, string quartet is then celebrated in all its richness and diversity in a contemporary festival atmosphere.

In 2020, the world’s biggest string quartet festival will embark on an eight-day voyage of discovery, embracing tradition and experimentation; the familiar and the unknown. Explore, share and celebrate the string quartet in more than 50 concerts, lectures, talks and masterclasses at the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam – from 25 January to 1 February 2020.

Each festival day is similarly structured: start your day with an Early Beethoven (9:30), listen to personal stories about the string quartet in a Coffee Talk (10:15) and delve into the finer points of string quartet playing in a Masterclass (11:30). In the afternoon you can explore the boundaries of this art form in Extending String Quartet (14:15) and hear its finest and most significant works in Selected By (17:00). Experience the festival high points each evening: the Evening Concert (20:15) and Late Beethoven (22:30).

Save the dates for the next editions:

25 January — 1 February 2020

28 January — 5 February 2022

26 January — 3 February 2024
