Tonight’s Orchestre de Paris Prom was very much a concert of two halves, in the first of which they got to show their sensitive, introspective side, reflecting on the nature of life and lamenting too-early death, then becoming considerably more extrovert in the second for some free-spirited buccaneering, and what the programme notes describe as “vivid, prolonged and grand noise”.

The opening of Henri Dutilleux’s Symphony no. 1, with its distinctive pizzicato opening full of tension and curiosity, opened the concert not with a bang but rather a seductive lure.

The programme notes suggested that Glinka was the father of Russian nationalism. Perhaps this is the case, but his overture to his second opera, Ruslan and Ludmilla, is undeniably an Italianate work, surely influenced by his meetings with Donizetti and Bellini in 1830.

Si le chef finlandais fait preuve d'un léger excès de contrôle dans Le Tombeau de Couperin de Ravel, il dirige une formidable version de Petrouchka après l'entracte.

Le violoniste allemand et l'orchestre de la capitale se sont montrés particulièrement fusionnels dans le Concerto d'Elgar, avec un excellent Dima Slobodeniouk officiant à la baguette.

Drame psychologique avec la Symphonie n° 5 de Tchaïkovski, enchantements avec Ravel, voyage cinématographique avec Tcherepnine : l'Orchestre de Paris a livré un programme haut en couleur sous la baguette du chef russe.

Pour leur premier concert de la saison, le chef et l'orchestre ont proposé une Eroica mémorable, après avoir accompagné l'excellente Lisa Batiashvili dans le Concerto pour violon de Tchaïkovski.
