Choreographer Russell Maliphant and lighting designer Michael Hulls could just as easily be described as innovators or architects. Conceal | Reveal at Sadler's Wells tells the story of their creative partnership spanning 20 years. Together they have forged new choreographic terrain, a topography of movement and light.

Russell Maliphant presents five stunning works, including three new creations Still, Traces and Still Current at Sadler's Wells.

Russell Maliphant and his dancers presented Still / Current, an evening of solos, duets and trios at Artsdepot in north London this past Wednesday. Though working with what are clearly excellent dancers, all of the pieces were mediated by the lighting. The lighting design was by Maliphant’s long-time collaborator Michael Hulls.

The curtains open on The Rodin Project to reveal a large, irregularly shaped set draped in flowing white cloth. It hangs from the ceiling in icy sheets, reflective of the snowy landscape of the theatre’s exterior. Characters begin to emerge in the growing light, crawling and scampering slowly across the jagged stage.

Last October Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant choreographed a 15 minute solo, Afterlight (Part One), for an evening at Sadler’s Wells celebrating the centenary of the founding of Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes.
