Piotr Beczala caused nothing less than a sensation at the Bayreuth Festival in the summer of 2018: when the tenor dropped out just as rehearsals for the new production of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin were due to begin, Piotr Beczala spontaneously stepped into the breach – and audiences and press alike were overwhelmed by his Bayreuth début. Now the artist, who has been a regular guest in Zurich for many years, can also be heard here as Lohengrin in Andreas Homoki’s production. Other superlative Wagner singers will also be heard under conductor Simone Young: Elza van den Heever as Elsa, Kwangchul Youn as Heinrich der Vogler, Martin Gantner as Friedrich von Telramund and Anna Smirnova as Ortrud.

Elsa of Brabant is in difficulties: she is accused of having murdered her brother to seize power. The case cannot be settled by human intelligence, so a trial by combat shall decide the matter. Yet nobody dares to prove the young woman’s innocence by the sword. A mysterious knight appears and promises to fight on her behalf and marry her. However, he does stipulate one condition: Elsa must never ask her husband’s name or enquire about his background… Like his heroes, Richard Wagner dreams of a world in which love is not doomed to failure and unquestioning trust is not wanton naïveté. A world in which truth exists and is not refuted by reality. As Elsa puts it: «Happiness without regret does not exist.»
