In 1881, Johannes Brahms reported to his friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg that he had written «just a little piano concerto». A witty understatement. The great B flat major Concerto for Piano and Orchestra with its four large symphonic movements is one of the favourite pieces of Rudolf Buchbinder. Lahav Shani, himself an outstanding pianist, conducts the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. A piano concerto of this dimension requires an appropriate symphony as contrast, which, in this case, also begins with the sound of horns. More than ten years after Franz Schubert’s death, Robert Schumann brought his «Great C Major Symphony» to light, which is still one of the most imposing works in the symphonic repertoire today.
