by Marcos Morau

Marcos Morau’s trademark is one of unforgettable images of photographic intensity. In recent years, this Spanish choreographer has made a name for himself with his surreal productions, and emerged ass a celebrated guest at the world’s most renowned dance festivals. In 2005, Morau founded the «La Veronal» company in Barcelona – an artist collective that combines dance, film, photography, and literature. Morau’s pieces draw the audience into emotional, unsolvable pictorial puzzles that are constantly on the brink of falling apart, and that somehow manage to be both profound and highly entertaining. Morau’s expressionistic tableaux draw life from a vocabulary of movement that is rapid, filigreed, and full of wit. For him, dance is a mixture of theater and science fiction. And now, he’ll work with the Ballett Zürich for the first time. The starting point for his new creation is Der grüne Tisch, a legendary dance piece by Kurt Jooss from 1932, in which the German choreographer depicted the First World War as a dance of death. Dancers appear as figures at the mercy of unnamed authorities. Assembled at the «green table», they wield a power that simultaneously decides the fate of millions, while denying any individual their own destiny. For Jooss, those figures were ten men in tailcoats, adorned with grimacing masks, ranting about politics. The message: How easy it is to pass judgment on the life and death of others when one is far removed from any semblance of reality. Ninety years after Jooss, Morau addresses today’s power structures in his new piece, Nachtträume. Are we at the mercy of the will of the powerful? Who decides who gets to hold power, and who rules the world?
