We embark on a musical journey through time with our baroque instruments to a fascinating playground of the 17th century. Everything centres around the music at the court of Queen Christina of Sweden, whose legacy is linked to the names of many composers famous today. She was one of the most colourful figures of her time – eccentric, self-confident and art-loving. She ruled in Stockholm for several years, but then renounced the crown, converted to Catholicism and moved to Rome, the city of her heart. There, until the end of her life, she lived as a generous patron of the arts, devoting herself in particular to music, which she considered »one of the most soul-stirring of the arts«. Her luxurious palazzo was frequented by many important figures, and she regularly organised academies where her guests were treated to spellbinding musical experiences. In doing so, she discovered and supported many promising talents of the time: the then still largely unknown 19-year-old Alessandro Scarlatti became her »Maestro di capella«. She also recognised the astonishing talent of the very young Arcangelo Corelli, who dedicated his Opus 1 to her, thereby laying the foundation for his impressive trio sonatas. An indefatigable patron, she also regularly commissioned compositions from various artists, including Alessandro Stradella, with whom she is said to have had an affair. In this chamber concert, we present our audience with a kaleidoscope of virtuoso and passionate music from the lifetime of this remarkable woman.
