Steve Reich’s favourite ensemble plays his Music for 18 Musicians, his Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet and his breezy recent score, Pulse.

The composer’s philosophy of ‘music as a gradual process’ has attracted listeners from all traditions, ages and nationalities.

His mesmeric, vibrating musical canvasses are as much influenced by the artworks of Frank Stella and Gerhard Richter as by Bach, bebop and African drumming.

In this concert, Southbank Centre Associate Artist Colin Currie brings his own ensemble to Royal Festival Hall to perform works by Reich spanning four decades.

With Music for 18 Musicians, Reich’s ‘minimalist’ style went maximalist.

‘What I was really concerned with was making beautiful music, above anything else,’ said Reich of the piece, completed in 1976, which introduced thrilling harmonic movement to his beautifully austere structures.

In 2015, Reich glanced back at that pivotal work’s rhythmic pattern when creating a fresh piece, Pulse.

‘This work really leads you by the hand on a deeply authentic Steve Reich journey,’ says Colin Currie.

Reich’s energetic Double Sextet won the composer his first Pulitzer Prize in 2009.

Playing from memory, Currie and his ensemble invite you into Reich’s hypnotic parallel universe of sound.
