Mao Fujita is a guest of the Easter Festival for the third year in a row. This time, the young Japanese pianist takes to the stage alone for a recital that spans over a century of music, from Beethoven to Berg.

In just a few years, Mao Fujita’s sensibility and natural playing talent have made his name on the musical world’s greatest stages. A previous winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition (aged only 20), he has put together a truly personal programme this year, with pieces that contrast, echo and follow on from one another. He will be playing the first sonatas by both Beethoven and Brahms. A powerful, virtuoso piece, Brahms’ Sonata takes on the form of the variation in the second movement, something Mendelssohn also found inspiring (and whose Variations sérieuses are very much an homage to Beethoven) as did Berg in an early piece that we do not often hear in concert.
