Brass instruments have a history that stretches far back in time, which makes John Dowland’s music a perfect match for brass quintet arrangements. Dowland was a contemporary of Shakespeare, and we’ll hear a selection of his beautiful pieces originally composed for lute.
Joakim Agnas is principal trumpet of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a composer and arranger. Here, he presents his brass quintet version of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale – music full of character and wit, with echoes of Viennese waltz, ragtime and jazz. Agnas has also composed the opening piece of the concert, Tango – music he describes as strongly inspired by Stravinsky.
A special treat in this programme is the chance to compare Stravinsky’s version of Ragtime from The Soldier’s Tale with Scott Joplin’s The Easy Winners – one of the biggest hits of the ragtime era.
