Yoshida Miyako's Selection, our second triple bill features three exciting ballets. One of our new productions is A Million Kisses to My Skin, choreographed by the world-renowned David DAWSON to Johann Sebastian Bach's piano concerto. The other new production is 5 Tangos by Maestro Hans van Manen, set to Astor Piazzolla's music, evoking the sultry style of Argentine tango with the discipline of ballet. The third work is George BALANCHINE's popular Theme and Variations, making for a programme rich in variety. We trust you will enjoy seeing new aspects of our dancers as they take on the challenge of these new works.

"A Million Kisses to My Skin"

This work by British choreographer David Dawson was first performed by the Dutch National Ballet in 2000. In his programme notes, Dawson wrote that he was bidding farewell to his career as a classical ballet dancer and setting his sights on a new style of expression. Set to Bach's piano concerto, this neo-classical style ballet, reminiscent of Balanchine, is poised to captivate audiences.

"5 Tangos"

Set to Piazzolla's modern tango masterpiece 5 Tangos, this work was first performed by the Dutch National Ballet in 1977. This impassioned ballet, set to the music of the tango, is one of the most frequently performed of all Hans van Manen's works.

"Theme and Variations"

Introduced in 1947 by George Balanchine, this piece is characterised by florid brilliance and beauty, with Tchaikovsky's music expressed through steps and body movements of great finesse. Since its first performance in 2000, this work has been highly regarded for its beauty as an ensemble, with many repeat performances by the NBJ. We trust you will enjoy Balanchine's choreography, lauded as "music made visible".
