Roger Nichols was decorated Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 2006 for his 40 years of service to French music. Following study at Oxford in the 1960s, he broadcast regularly for BBC Radio 3 and is a foremost authority on Ravel (his biography of the composer was described in The Telegraph as ‘brilliant...written by the Englishman who knows his work better than any other’). Nichols’s complete sympathy and understanding of Ravel’s songs allied to his appreciation of Ravel’s refined genius will infuse this study event, a perfect introduction to the concert which follows and a must for anyone who wants to discover how much more there is to this composer than his Bolero.
