Dane HurstChoreographyWest Side Story: Symphonic Dances

The American Dream turns suffocatingly sour in Trouble in Tahiti, Bernstein’s unsparing examination of a marriage falling apart in 1950s suburbia. Written five years before West Side Story, its score is heavily influenced by the syncopated rhythms of jazz and the distinctly American language of musicals and the movies. Showpiece number ‘Island Magic’ gets the full Hollywood treatment in Matthew Eberhardt’s sharply styled and deeply touching production.

Bernstein arranged the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story to stand on its own terms, free of the story of his 1957 musical. This new dance work, choreographed by Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Dane Hurst, interprets Bernstein’s thrilling, poignant music – including settings of the songs ‘Somewhere’ and ‘Maria’ – to explore the experience of young people through themes of group identity and family, conflict and violence.
