Jules Massenet describes the short life of the beautiful Manon as a rise and fall: Manon, a young woman from the French provinces, seizes the first opportunity she gets to escape her predetermined path, which should have led her to a convent. She elopes to Paris with Des Grieux, a noble student. She bores quickly of their impoverished existence in an attic apartment in Paris, and quickly leaves Des Grieux to take her place living a luxurious life at the side of a rich admirer. Just as Des Grieux is about to enter the priesthood, Manon returns to him. But the two, united in love and hatred for one another, have no future together: Manon falls victim to intrigue and dies from the rigors of prison. With Manon, 42-year old Jules Massenet became one of the leading opera composers in France overnight. The choice of subject catered to the Belle Époque’s penchant for fallen girls and child-women and created for contemporary male audiences a wishful image of their own suppressed desires. The character of Manon is beautiful and dangerous, innocent and manipulative. She falls for the young Des Grieux who, controlled by his father, hopes to find a more free life through Manon.

The revival of this production features an entirely new cast in the demanding main roles: young French soprano Vannina Santoni makes her debut at the Opernhaus Zürich in the role of Manon. Benjamin Bernheim, a welcome face to Zurich audiences, sings Des Grieux. And Massenet’s dazzling, colorful score is in the hands of general music director Fabio Luisi.
