A faded opera diva plots her revenge from an apartment in 1970s Paris. At a traumatic performance six years earlier, her career came to an abrupt end. The question is, will her voice and her nerves cope with a return to the limelight? As our diva attempts to turn back the clock and maintain her glamorous existence in the privacy of her own home, she appears to be gradually distancing herself from the world. A visit from a journalist awakens her hope that all is not lost, but will she be able to overcome her demons?

Prima Donna is the indie icon and opera lover Rufus Wainwright’s tribute to the art of Romantic opera. Prima Donna, his first opera, premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2009, and has been performed at a number of opera houses. Prima Donna is a Maria Callas-inspired story about a self-destructive diva and our insatiable need to both applaud her and mock her.

Sung in French with Swedish surtitles.
