‘Fidelio’ is at once a brigand’s tale, a political drama and a paean to conjugal love, a singspiel and an oratorio to freedom. Originating from Beethoven’s unbounded yearning for ‘fraternity’, his only opera also bears the hallmarks of a fairy-tale. The plot unfolds as a story among salt-of-the-earth people and depicts a courageous woman whose love for her husband helps her to rise above fear and death. The conclusion of the opera is a grand happy ending that far transcends the tale of individual liberation, conjuring up a utopia of mankind living in freedom and harmony. The magnificent Salzburg Marionette Theatre will present this famous story, staged by Thomas Reichert, as a tale of hope for every age.

Musical version: Deutsche Grammophon recording of 1957 with Kieth Engen, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ernst Haeflinger, Leonie Rysanek, Gottlob Frick, Irmgard Seefried, Friedrich Lenz, the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Bavarian State Opera Chorus, conducted by Ferenc Fricsay
