Opera in seven scenes, in German, with Hungarian and English surtitles

For the first time on the programme of the Opera

What is an artist’s duty and responsibility? This is the question posed by Paul Hindemith after seeing the clouds gathering over the sky of the Third Reich. The German composer then went on to formulate his private and artistic dilemmas in an opera set in the time of a 16th-century German peasant uprising. The protagonist of the work, Matthias Grünewald, is a painter from the Low Countries – the creator of the famous Isenheim Altarpiece – who observes a world ablaze in political and religious conflict with the same doubts that Hindemith himself felt at the destruction unleashed by Nazi Germany’s menacing power.
Undeservedly rarely performed anywhere in the world, this work is being presented by the Opera for the first time in a production featuring the world-famous Icelandic baritone Tómas Tómasson in the title role and directed by Máté Szabó.
