Hubay, Jeno (1858-1937)Tante Simona (Aunt Simona)
Dohnányi, Ernst von (1877-1960)Le luthier de Crémone (The Violin Maker of Cremona)

One-act operas in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English surtitles

So who will win the violin-making contest in Cremona, and who will get to marry the beautiful daughter of the master violin maker Ferrari? And will Aunt Simona, who was disappointed in love when she was young, manage – purely out of love – to prevent her niece from finding a husband?
The lightness of Hubay’s catchy music and the gloomy, but deeply moving, violin solo – which the composer himself would play on festive occasions – combine to simultaneously recall French elegance and the atmosphere of an operetta, while Dohnányi’s comic opera is characterised by restrained cheerfulness: the composer was clearly paying his respects to Wagner and Richard Strauss with its richly composed music.
The two works will be performed together in a production by Bence Varga, who attracted notice with his directing of Sancta Susanna last year, with new Hungarian text by Attila Galambos.
