The Monster in the Maze brings together over 200 participants: opera singers, amateur singers of all ages, professional orchestral musicians and young musicians. Their mission: to defeat a child-eating monster, the Minotaur.

The exciting narrative is well-known from Greek mythology, based in a time of war between Athens and the island of Crete. A labyrinth on the island is the clandestine home of King Minos’ monster, the Minotaur. To avoid total annihilation, the Athenians must take part in an heart-rending process and choose a number of youths to be sacrificed on Crete. Accompanying these poor doomed young souls crossing the ocean towards their grisly fate we find the hero Theseus, who has sworn an oath to do all he can to save the children of Athens from death in the labyrinth.

The roles are played by opera singers, actors and three huge choruses put together especially for The Monster in the Maze. The performance is a part of the Göteborg Opera Skapa’s project: creative work for participation and creativity.

Mattias Ermedahl is director, and no stranger to the Göteborg Opera where he has performed several major roles and, in recent years, directed a number of productions.

The Monster in the Maze is the creation of the British composer Jonathan Dove, commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic and Festival d’Art Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence. It was first performed in Berlin in 2015. Dove’s music has opened up new audiences of all ages to the magic of the performing arts.
