Rossini’s inventive, entertaining music generates situational co-medy of a type rare in opera, inspiring stage director Kari Heiskanen to create a zippy performance. “It’s got surprises and action; it’s a colourful farce in every respect,” he says of The Barber of Seville. The plot is always the same in comic operas: first create chaos, then solve it. This Savonlinna production is the first time fashion designer Teemu Muurimäki has done costumes for opera. “The characters in the story dress up in disguise, but the audience must remain aware of who is who. You have to allow for this in the costumes.” Teemu is, however, not put off by condi - tions in the Castle, since he has been tackling them ever since his schooldays
