In the mid-19th century, the American navy forced Japan to open its ports. Knowledge about Japanese culture subsequently spread in the West and inspired numerous artists there. For Madama Butterfly, Giacomo Puccini also found inspiration in a story in which the American and Japanese cultures collide. The newly discovered musical world of Asian culture inspired the composer to write his hitherto most ambitious score. The opera’s tragic plot revolves around the American Lieutenant Pinkerton, who marries the young geisha Butterfly for the duration of his stay in Japan. After he returns to America, Butterfly waits with their son for him to come back – in vain. She is destroyed by her futile hopes. With overwhelmingly beautiful, serenely abstract images and great narrative tension, the young American director Ted Huffman impressed audiences with his first work at Zurich Opera House. Under the direction of Fabio Luisi, the Chinese soprano Hui He will be singing the demanding title role in our revival production. Hui He is considered one of the leading interpreters of this part, in which she has also been heard with great success at the Met in New York. The Italian tenor Piero Pretti, who has already sung Pinkerton at the State Operas of Munich and Vienna, will be débuting at Zurich Opera House.
