To interpret Giulio Cesare we are particularly delighted with our cast and creative team this year. French-Swiss soprano and baroque specialist Marie Lys leads the cast as Cleopatra. Marie has only recently graduated, but is already in great demand in continental Europe where her talent in performing this very challenging repertoire is highly esteemed.  Cleopatra is her dream role, and we are very happy that she has chosen to make her debut in the role at Bury Court… as has Australian-born mezzo Helen Sherman, in the role of Cesare.  Helen is a former finalist in both the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World and Wigmore Hall International Song Competitions.

We always aim to achieve in-depth quality in our cast, and this season is no exception. Although there are now more countertenors, thanks to the growing popularity of baroque opera, we have cast two young countertenors who we think will combine to bring a unique quality to the production: the outstanding Russell Harcourt, in the role of Sesto and  Kieron-Connor Valentine who will be Tolomeo.  At the astonishingly young age of 21, Kieron has already been among the prizes in numerous competitions, and is undoubtedly one to watch into the future. David Ireland (Achilla) has just completed a year at the National Opera Studio, and is, in our view just about the best young bass of his generation.

Australian Director Greg Eldridge has recently completed his stay at Royal Opera House Covent Garden as the Jette Parker Young Director, and just won rave reviews for his new production of Tosca for Iclandic Opera. We are most fortunate that he has managed to slot us in to his hectic schedule. We are equally blessed to have another globetrotter, Dane Lam, as Conductor - Dane seems to spend as much time in the air as he does on land, but we are confident that his youth and mixed Australian/Chinese blood will generate much exhilarating music!
