Noche Flamenca Throws a Party

A very entertaining performance but without its star Soledad Barrio, who was injured, there was a noticeable lack of cohesion.

Soledad Barrio takes to the stage in New York City, in a mixed Noche Flamenca programme. Reviewed at the Joyce Theatre on Thursday 30th October 2014.

Noche Flamenca, one of Spain’s most successful touring companies, presented an evening of music and dance at the McCarter Theatre. The performance featured the acclaimed Soledad Barrio and guest artist Alejandro Granados.For many Americans, ‘flamenco’ means stereotypical Spanish dance. In reality, flamenco is a combination of poetry, music, and dance, with cross-cultural roots.

Juliano Nunes’ Romeo and Juliet for Philadelphia Ballet works on all fronts: as a visual spectacle with highly original choreography and as a vehicle for cultivating memorable performances.

Dutch National Ballet give an exemplary account of a quadruple bill comprised of the late Hans van Manen’s works. It’s a wonderful tribute to the great master choreographer.
