Wiener Staatsoper

'Can there be a more potent opera orchestra than the Vienna State Opera’s? I doubt it. It’s the low instruments that make the biggest impact – cellos, basses, tuba, trombones, contrabassoons... When the orchestra was in full cry at the points where the “higher powers” show their hand, the power was overwhelming. But the high instruments play their full part, not least with the high woodwind wail of the falcon’s cry. Throughout, Thielemann drew from his players an extraordinary richness of colour palette, providing the best possible demonstration of the compositional virtuosity in this score.'

Ludovic Tézier (Don Giovanni) and Andrea Carroll (Zerlina) © Michael Pöhn | Wiener Staatsoper GmbH
The Don is dark and light, the production somewhere in between, with strong singing and musical direction but stodgy staging.

Plácido Domingo (Macbeth) © Michael Pöhn | Wiener Staatsoper GmbH
At 78, Domingo rages against the ravages of time, and – certainly in this production – shows the next generation a thing or two about stagecraft.

A spirited Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Wiener Staatsoper

Lawrence Zazzo (Oberon) and Erin Morley (Tytania) © Michael Pöhn | Wiener Staatsoper GmbH
Countertenor Lawrence Zazzo is more than at home in the role of Oberon, and possesses a vocal quality ideal for the scheming king of the fairies, simultaneously eerie and seductive.

Mistrust, rage and colonialism: Otello at the Staatsoper

Aleksandrs Antonenko (Otello) © Wiener Staatsoper GmbH | Michael Pöhn
During the “Salce” and “Ave Maria” in Act Four Bezsmertna turned this to magical effect, thinning out and floating her shimmering soprano into gossamer threads.

Flórez makes a role debut in a stylish production of Manon in Vienna

Nino Machaidze (Manon Lescaut) and Juan Diego Flórez (Chevalier Des Grieux) © Wiener Staatsoper GmbH | Michael Pöhn
Juan Diego Flórez was impressive in his first portrayal of a lovesick soldier/priest in Manon, with Nino Machaidze's accomplished heroine. Andrei Serban's modern and thoughtful production was still fresh and arresting.
